The American Legion itself was founded on March 15th, 1919 in Paris, France. Barnegat's post is Post 232 and its namesake is John Wesley Taylor. Some of the founding members of the Legion were: Dr. F. M. Bunnell, Cooper Conrad, David G. Conrad Jr., Wilkinson Grove Conrad, Emerson G. Farley, John H. Kilpatrick, Enoch Olowich, Grover C. Penn, Lester Ridgeway, Howard S. Rutter, J. Horace Sprague Jr., William P. Sprague, Kenneth Tolbert, and John F. Weaver.
