Some of the earliest schools in Barnegat were small private ones. The first one was a stone building located on the Albina Falkinburg farm and the second was located on Taylor Lane Road, which was once Clarkson Cranmer's farm. Some schools were located behind churches, such as one behind the Methodist Church on Birdsall Street and another which was once part of a building that is now a church on West Bay Avenue.Â
In 1867, the Barnegat Primary School opened on the corner of Brook and School Streets. When the building was first built, it was once a church. Some of the teachers that taught at that school were: Emma Collins, Mira Marole, Louise Stulz, and Stokes Collins. It originally started with two rooms, then enlarged to three, and finally four rooms by 1894. In the early 1900s, the building was sold to Joseph Howard Perrine of Barnegat for his "Perrine's Boat Works". The blackboards were still on the walls when Perrine purchased it. Around 1970, the building was torn down, today the spot is now flat land.

In 1901, the Barnegat Public School was built on Birdsall Street. It was originally partially a high school until 1930, when a new high school building was built on Route 9. The Barnegat Public School was also a grade school from 1901 until 1956. During World War II, and even the Cold War, many students would observe for planes and report back to the teachers from the top of the building. Later on, the building was condemned after falling into disrepair, and was ultimately demolished around 1962.

In 1931, the Barnegat High School was built on Route 9. The school was completed to the cost of $140,000.00 (today that's around $2,543,162.87!). John Nobles Pierson & Son of Perth Amboy were the architect, Joseph Kolster of Beverly, New Jersey was the general contractor, George W. Stilwell of Perth Amboy, NJ handled heating and ventilating, plumbing was done by William A. Salt of Seaside Heights, New Jersey, Carlton Elwell of Toms River, New Jersey did the eletrical, and grading by William Ambrose Cox of Barnegat. The school opened on January 9th, 1931. The school mascot was the Barnegat Pirates, and the school colors were black and red. In 1957, the last classes of Barnegat High School either graduated or were transferred to Southern Regional as Barnegat High School was converted to an elementary school. In 1975, the elementary school was renamed the "Elizabeth V. Edwards Elementary School", after Elizabeth Vaughn Edwards, who was a well-known educator of Barnegat. In the early 2000s, the elementary school closed and the building was later abandoned. The school was rumoured to be haunted by a janitor, and Elizabeth V. Edwards herself, with the television show "Ghost Hunters" investigating it in 2014. It is featured in their episode: "A Textbook Case". In 2021, meetings were held to discuss the future of the abandoned building. Ideas ranged from potentially renovating the school to demolition. In 2022, the building was ultimately demolished to the cost of around $950,000.00. Today the site is now an empty field.
